We grow three varieties of blueberries on our farm - Duke, Blue Ray and Jersey. Duke's fruit first in late June, followed by Blue Ray in early July. Jersey's come later in July. We have an acre of blueberries, not a huge operation by any stretch of the imagination, but one that can service our little community quite nicely.
Hours of operation are: Mon, 4-7 p.m., Wed, 10-2 p.m. and Sat 1-5 p.m. or by appointment. Call or email us (Contact Us) to request an appointment to pick using our self-service option.
We treat our blueberry patch as organic, but we won't pursue an organically grown certification. We don't use commercial grade pesticides or herbicides on our crop. We keep weed pressure down by using fabric mulch around the base of each plant. We're prepared to use a paraffin based spray if we experience pest issues. We pick off insect pests by hand or use traps.
We irrigate when necessary with water pumped from our farm pond. We have a high water table and spring fed pond. We can easily provide the moisture for the juiciest blueberries even during periods of dryness.
We keep our grassy rows between plants cut and trimmed. Grass helps retain the ground moisture and provides for a more enjoyable time walking among the bushes when picking.
Each blueberry variety has it's own characteristics. While all three, Duke, Blue Ray and Jersey are Northern Highbush varieties, they look and taste just a little different. The Dukes are big, plump and sweet. These early bloomers are one of our favorites. The Blue Rays are often as big as the Dukes, tangy sweet and have a shimmering neon blue color. And they are the showiest plants in the fall. The Jersey's produce smaller, sweeter, slower ripening berries, and are very prolific. While we eat all types straight from the bush, the Jersey's make the best pies and muffins because of their size.
The nutritional benefits of blueberries are now well publicized (US Highbush Blueberry Council). With just 80 calories per cup and virtually no fat, blueberries offer many noteworthy nutritional benefits.
